A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA... with book, "North American Indians and Friends..." 1844

Book by Edward Marsh, London
Map original color, 18x21 inches, Bowden/Clark

A fine, seldom-seen map with the Texas Republic at its fullest extent. It names and lists the populations of many Indian tribes as well as showing the districts for the Quakers' annual meetings. Reservations in the Midwest are especially delineated. The book is unexpectedly fascinating and readable in its unsparing reporting of the relationships between the Quakers, other whites, and the Indians, whom the Quakers felt were badly mistreated. Representatives were sent West to delve into their condition, and the reports (with long quotes from the Indians) are heartfelt. There is a small map of North America as frontispiece, showing tribal locations.
