CARTE DES VOYAGES DU CAPe. CARVER DANS L'INTERIEUR DE L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE (with book) 1784Jonathan Carver/Robert Benard, Paris, 1784 The 1784 first French edition of Carver's famous 1778 book and map, the latter notable for the first use of the name Oregon (with that spelling) on a printed map. Here, "Source de l'Oregon" is applied to a western lake and river. The map centers on the present-day Wisconsin and Minnesota region, but stretches well into the Great Plains. The map shows Carver's track as he "penetrated farther into the West than any other Englishman before the Revolution" (Howes 215), stimulating curiosity about routes to the Pacific. It is filled with notes and detail. The map is on heavy paper, with some brown spots on the left margin outside the image. A framing margin has been added at upper right. The book was a best-seller in its day and is in very good condition, with only minor chipping to the original hard cover. $1,250 (MW016) |
