CARTE DU TEXAS POUR LES MISSIONS ET VOYAGES DE L'ABBE EM DOMENECH (after J. Cordova); with book. 1857Emmanuel Domenech/Gaume Freres Editeur, Paris Emmanuel Domenech came to Texas from Paris in 1846 and was ordained in San Antonio in 1848 -- possibly the first priest ordained in the new state. The map, patterned on that of Jacob de Cordova, was issued after he returned to France in 1852. It traces his travels, and is a fine portrayal of the state's settlements, missions, tribes and topography of the time. It is hard to find, especially in this excellent condition. Abbe Domenech's book, "Journal d'un Missionnaire au Texas et au Mexique," paints colorful although not altogether flattering pictures of Texas, describing Houston as "infested with Methodists and ants," and Austin as "a small dirty town." It probably was. Good margins. $700 ((SW203)) |
