MAPPA GEOGRAPHICA...INDIAE OCCIDENTALIS, c.1740Homann Heirs/D'Anville, Nuremberg A decorative item with an elaborate cartouche. Its centerpiece is D'Anville's scarce 1731 map of the Gulf of Mexico. This map improved the delineation of the Gulf Coast and was copied many times by others. It is bordered by a large view of Mexico City, plans of St. Augustine, Vera Cruz, and San Domingo, and a map of the Isthmus of Panama. European possessions are color-keyed. At one time folded twice; bottom margin a bit narrow, ample for framing all around. An old mold patch on the back has been treated by a conservator. $975 (MC027) |
