CORONELLI GLOBE GORE: NEW ENGLAND TO WEST INDIES, SOUTH AMERICA COAST, 1697Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Venice The premier globe-maker of his time, Coronelli produced beautifully accurate globes -- some so large they could be entered -- pocket globes, and a 3.5-foot globe for which this gore was designed. It was published in the first book of gores, his "Libro dei Globi." The Italian grace and style of Coronelli's work stands out in the gore's fine engraving and vignettes; even in its lettering. Its detail is the best available, as Coronelli, a Jesuit scholar, had access to Jesuit reports from the New World. Very good condition, off-white paper. The photo was shot for high contrast; small discolorations at top and lower right are much less visible on the actual gore. $1,950 (NE033) |
