POPPLE, TEXAS-LOUISIANA (SHEET 9), 1735

Henry Popple, London, 1735
Black and white, 19x26 inches

The most desirable sheet of the first large-scale printed map of North America, which, with all sheets assembled, would result in a map more than eight feet square. This sheet spans Texas and Louisiana, goes west past Santa Fe, east past Mobile Bay and north into Oklahoma. The map was produced in 1733 for the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to help settle British, French and Spanish territorial disputes. This 1735 edition is identical except for the addition of page numbers. It is Popple's only map, and Benjamin Franklin was so impressed with it that he ordered two copies for the Pennsylvania Assembly. Dark impression and very good condition, with ample margins. Some marginal tears repaired, outer corners slightly frayed.
