A NEW MAP OF TEXAS, OREGON AND CALIFORNIA WITH THE REGIONS ADJOINING... 1846

S.A. Mitchell, Philadelphia
Original full and outline color, 20x19 inches; booklet 3.25x5.25 inches

A striking map of great significance, portraying the American West when the tide was turning for the United States and against Mexico, at a time when geographical myth was turning into observed fact, and at the point Texas joined the Union. Texas is shown here in its fullest extent, reaching to Wyoming. Carl Wheat (520) says this map "exerted great influence, not only on the public, but on commercial cartographers," particularly because of the looming war with Mexico. All the latest explorations come together on this map. A 46-page, "Accompaniement" booklet (separate) describes the western regions soon to become part of the United States. Good condition; folds lightly browned and professionally reinforced.
