CARTE DE LA LOUISIANE ET DU COURS DU MISSISSIPI, 1730

Guillaume Delisle (Covens & Mortier), Amsterdam
Original outline color; 17.5x23.5 inches

The Amsterdam edition of one of the most influential maps in American history, particularly significant for the Southeast and Texas. It is, in fact, "the map that named Texas," in a note reading "Mission de los Teijas etablie en 1716," the first use of the name in any form on a map (in the 1718 first state). "The mother and main source of all the later maps of the Mississippi and the whole West of the United States," (J.G. Kohl), it shows the great French explorations of the era and was copied for decades. Excellent condition; two glue spots (from hinging) in wide upper margins well away from image and platemark.

$3,750 (SW225)
