NEW MAP OF THE STATE OF TEXAS, Compiled from J. De Cordova's Large Map, 1857

J. H. Colton, New York
Original full color, 15.5x24.75 inches

An early issue (1857. though dated 1856) of one of the finest, largest, most desirable maps of the period, in excellent condition and color. Based on Jacob De Cordova's rare 1849 map, it was published right after Young and Maverick counties had been formed and before the vertical line of counties was created past the 100th meridian in 1858. There are two Bosque counties, two Travis counties, a Coryell and an area marked "to Coryell," plus Cooke County in two places. Across West Texas are two proposed routes for a Pacific railroad. A fine picture of evolving early statehood, it is the only edition of this map with a plain ruled border. Ample margins.
