NUEVA HISPANIA TABULA NOVA, 1574
G. Ruscelli/G. Ziletti (engraver), Venice, 1574
Full recent hand color; 7.25x10.25 inches
The second separate printed map of the southern half of the United States -- a larger-format update of Gastaldi's rare 1548 map, which showed Yucatan as an island -- here corrected in this Ruscelli edition of Ptolemy, first published in 1561. Baja California is correctly a peninsula. The geography and the placenames reflect the expeditions of Pineda, Cabeza de Vaca and Moscoso. This region would not be better mapped until the end of the century. Excellent recent hand color; some wrinkling, mostly to (ample) margins.
