NUOVA CALIFORNIA... 1851Benedetto Marzolla, Naples Very scarce. The border of "Nuova California" reaches nearly to Santa Fe. Under the label "Deserto di California," which takes up much of the West, a lengthy note in Italian refers to Fremont's 1843-44 expedition and to the character of the country. The map adds much information to an 1850 map by Hippolyte Ferry, who also used information from Duflot du Mofras. At left and bottom are extensive texts describing California. A very large region in California proper is marked "Nva. Helvetia," containing considerable detail. The map is crammed with notes and symbols for forts, missions, mines, ranches, minerals (with symbols for 10), wagon trails, etc. There is a nice inset map of the San Francisco Bay-Monterey area. Published in Marzolla's "Atlante Geografico..." On strong, off-white paper with subtle coloring, wide margins. Faint stains lower left and right corners barely touch the text. Our photo does not do this attractive map justice. $1,950 (NW039) |
